Goldman v Citi: where would you rather work?

COMMENTS

If you're a front-line investment banker, GS is still the top bank to be in.  Read all comments »

Goldman Sachs is starting to shower staff with more money, while Citi is supposedly Asia’s best bank.

But which firm would you rather work for? Can struggling Citi really cut it against the might of Goldman?

Despite its well-documented woes in the US, Citi has been given the “Best Bank in Asia” title by financial magazine Euromoney. It got the award due to its strong franchise value and leadership in the corporate and investment banking sectors. Anyone care to disagree?

Meanwhile, the average Goldman Sachs employee is within striking distance of taking home close to US$1m in compensation and benefits this year. Releasing its corporate earnings results recently, the firm said money allocated for pay surged 75 per cent in the second quarter.

Which bank is the best place to grow your career and earn the big bucks? Are you less secure at credit-crunched Citi? Has the financial crisis only served to cement Goldman Sachs as the elite employer-of-choice for every banker? Let us know below.

Citi has probably made most of its cutbacks and it starting to get back on its feet. Don't forget the GS cut about 15% of its headcount...but it's results are undoubtedly impressive. If you're a front-line investment banker, GS is still the top bank to be in...with JP Morgan a close second.

Citi could complete for talent with Goldman...it's still the same today, or perhaps GS is even more dominant.

I've worked at one of them, while my best mate worked for the other. And we both agree that we'd both rather work at GS.

I'd work for neither. GS has no ethics. Citi is jus too political, and cat fighting. Plus Citi is nothing but a slowly dying soldier.

I had worked at both before. Definitely GS - no doubt!

With regards to Asia equity research, Citi's no match against GS...
Morgan S might have a chance.
But yes, GS has rediculously long hours... Given Citi's depth in research, I don't think the guys there put in too much effort.
