Would you lie about your layoff?

COMMENTS

There's no point lying if you were let go based on performance.  Read all comments »

If you’ve got an interview with a bank and are currently unemployed there’s one question you can’t avoid: why, exactly, were you laid off?

How are you coping with this question? Are you trying to hide the real reasons for your redundancy?

After all, banks' HR teams are overworked and many of them are finding it difficult to double check the details of retrenchments at other firms.

Are you putting the blame on general cost cutting or poor products, rather than your own performance?

How are you explaining away your layoff? Let us know below.

You should point out the entire circumstances of your redundancy, so as not to focus entirely on your own part.

It's easily if you were a back-office worker at a huge bank, part of a big cut effecting 1000s of people. then you can argue that it was just cost-cutting, lack of deal flow from the front office. revenue generators, however, don't have it so easy

If you unemployed, be thankful to even have an interview. banks will only give interviews to employed candidates who they judge NOT to be underperformers, so half the battle is already one

Any decent recruiter / HR business partner would do some kind of reference (plus it's a small market and people talk anyway!) so there's no point lying if you were let go based on performance.
If you feel that you have to lie even in this current environment, then maybe it's time for a career change!

How do you know if you were let go due to performance when companies don't even state the reason?

I have been to some interviews, some of the interviewers were very understanding.  As senior managers themselves, they know there are many reasons to be made redundant in addition to being a poor performer.  Such as they field you were in won't come back in the next 3-5 years, you are so much stronger than your boss in every aspect.  I fouced on the prospect of my line of business.  I may not have worked, because I am still un-employed.
