COMMENTS

My 2 cents worth, Insurance,  Fri 09 Oct 09

1. IMO, interests in Photography and South Asian Music, may be unnecessary, unless it's provides the skills for the job you wanted.

But "socializing and traveling"?? Who doesn't like that?? Please take that out.  Remeber you wanted to ge research job, no a dealer/marketer job, which your doing rite now.

2. The working experiences seems to be not in order.  Starting from the most recent would be preferable.

3. i do think you have a chance in reasearch job you've wanted, subject to your reasonable expectation of course. Seems like your research experiences qualify you at entry level. So be reasonable.

I wonder which firm would promote a fresh graduate to AVP in less than 1-2 years.

Get rid of the person interest stuff. And, even if the latest job is not you best one (which it ain't), you have to list your positions IN ORDER. There's just no getting around that, sorry.

"interested in academic-related work", "equity research".
I am thinking if these terms are interchangeable.

1. You didn't show what Bachelor degree you got in University of Singapore. This is basic information for any firm's HR for candidate selection.

2. CFA is standard across the globe. You don't need to list what you have covered in Level 1. Explaining what you studied in CFA makes your CV look weird. All you need to mention is you have attained level 1.

3. Your Education and Work Experience are not in chronological order. This will seriously confuse anyone who reads it. HR in big banks or brokerage firms do not have much time to decipher your CV, hence it will easily end up in the trash bin on their computers for batch deletion. Depends what job you are applying, only mentioning relevant skills obtained from each job is already good, the private school duties does not seem relevant for a financial services role and should keep it as short as possible.

4. The skills and interest section are overdone, it doesn't really expression what kind of person you really are outside work.

In conclusion, if you do happen to land on an interview, you have a lot of explaining to do.

Hi,

Suggest you be more patient in looking for an equity research job. There are many sell-side analysts (i consider them to be priority hirings for research roles) who are way more experienced, and yet unemployed. And as mentioned earlier, your experience is very limited, entry-level roles (i.e data collation, mining, charting, preparing presentation decks) is definitely more appropriate. Your previous role as an AVP is over-hyped, due to the great employees' market back then. It may pay to adjust your expectations towards more realistic terms (in terms of post and pay).

You may like to remove non-relevant material from your CV, again mentioned earlier by fellow eFinancial website users such as photography, South Asian music, socialising and travelling. Also, your internship in broadcasting and private education in Pakistan does not really help the cause. You can always explain at interviews about your gaps in between jobs.

Chronological order of relevant work experience is critical. Listing CMFAS modules wand CFA Level 1 will do. You may need to display more maturity in future jobs, as your past tenures work against you severely, in my opinion.

Good luck
